Year 3

The front of the building has been extended and the IT Suite relocated to maximise this use of space and create the largest and brightest possible classroom. The children also use the learning lounge for small group work or 1:1 support. Our learning lounge has bespoke tables and upholstered benches. It is a very popular learning environment.

The children are grouped according to ability and a full-time teaching assistant helps ensure that the needs of all children are met. We listen to the children read at least once a week. Children are encouraged to produce sustained pieces of work of ever increasing quality. There is a focus on drama in Year 3 which stimulates creative writing very successfully. The children enjoy the opportunity to experience a more formal learning environment as they progress through the school. In addition to reading and learning spellings, children are expected to complete one formal homework task weekly and practise their recorder. All children start formal recorder lessons in Year 3 with our specialist teacher Mrs LeRossignol. They are taught in small, ability groups.

As members of Key Stage 2, the children in Year 3 enjoy Friday Clubs which include a range of sport, IT skills, craft, gardening, art, French and cookery. All children get an opportunity to participate in all clubs and Friday afternoons prove very popular indeed.

The children in Year 3 are traditionally the choir in the annual Christmas Play. They also get to sit in the choir stalls, with Year 4, in our three annual services in church. Traditions such as organising and running the firework fair toy market, participating in the autumn and secret walks and performing in the gymnastic and dancing displays at the summer fair are available to children in Key Stage 2. Children also get the opportunity to represent the school at football, rugby and gymnastics.

The annual visit to Cranborne Ancient Technology Centre proves very popular.
